Sandwich Saturday

missions-sandwich-sat-lrgFor I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink.
(Matthew 25:35)
Aldersgate members join members of other local churches to provide lunch to homeless people and others in need. In months with a fifth Saturday, Aldersgate assembles 250 brown bag lunches to be distributed. Most of the adult Sunday school classes participate, along with our Middle School and High School youth groups.
Our adult Sunday school class members buy fruit, bottled water, granola bars, fruit cups, and ingredients for sandwiches. They assemble 200 sandwiches and the youth group makes another 50; enough for those who show up to get a healthy lunch, and sometimes an extra lunch to take with them.
An adult member delivers the lunches to St. John’s Episcopal Church in downtown Wichita. Youth members participate in distributing the lunches. A blessing is offered at 11 a.m., participants line up, and it takes only about 15 minutes to distribute all of the brown bags. Most people who receive a lunch come regularly and rely on the generosity of those who contribute to Sandwich Saturday.
Feeding the Mind
In addition to filling the bodies of people who are homeless or have limited income, this mission project also attempts to satisfy their minds. A portable lending library is available during Sandwich Saturdays, allowing participants to check out books and magazines. Magazines, particularly National Geographic, Popular Mechanics and similar titles, are especially popular. While romance novels aren’t too popular, biographies and historical books are always in demand. If you have books or magazines to donate, please bring them to the Aldersgate Church office.
