Harvest of Joy
By Rev. Emmanuel Afful

May those who sow in tears reap with shouts of joy. Those who go out weeping, bearing the seed for sowing, shall come home with shouts of joy, carrying their sheaves.  Psalm 126:5-6

There is nothing as sweet as enjoying the fruits of your labor. A line in a favorite Caribbean Christian song of mine said, “the hotter the battle, the sweeter the victory.” Many people in the second half of their life are enjoying the harvest of good work output during their active working times. For such people, retirement is a pleasure, apart from the nostalgic feelings they may have about their active working days. They employed themselves in hard work, and are now enjoying their later days. Life is simply made of cycles of reaping and sowing.  And a people reap whatever they sow.

The Christian life is also filled with this cycle as well as many paradoxes. In Christ, dying leads to living, giving leads to receiving, pain leads to power, trials leads to triumphs, and tests leads to testimonies.

In today’s scripture, the Psalmist encourages us not to give up in the season of sowing. This season of sowing can be very painful and difficult.  It is a time where one feels weary and dry.  It is also a period of waiting with great expectation. However, just as the farmer harvests grains after a long period of waiting, so do those who sow goodness in life will reap great harvest of blessings.

Therefore, do not be tired in well doing. Do not give up when it seems your labor in God’s kingdom is futile. Do not give up when no one appreciate your little efforts.  Do not give up when it seems no one understand the vision and dream God had given you. I encourage you to press on until you see the harvest of your labor.

PRAYER: Lord, give me the strength to continue to sow seeds of goodness and righteousness.
