Power to be Witnesses II
By Rev. Emmanuel Afful

But ye shall receive power, after that the Holy Ghost is come upon you: and ye shall be witnesses unto me both in Jerusalem, and in all Judaea, and in Samaria, and unto the uttermost part of the earth.  Acts 1:8

Deep down in the hearts of people there is the desire for some level of power. It feels good to be capable and not be completely dependent on others for your wellbeing. It feels wonderful to have all it takes to accomplish a task. Power is wonderful but it can also corrupt. Some people use their power to bully, intimidate, trample down, and destroy others.

The disciples were about to receive power beyond their imagination. They’ve been weaklings for some time. They’ve been intimidated and they’ve demonstrated lack of faith and inability to understand some of Jesus’ parables, but the situation was about to change.  The power of the Holy Spirit was going to transform these disciples into a power house for the kingdom of God.

God’s power has purpose attached to it.

The disciples would receive power to become witnesses of Christ. They would employ God’s power for the service of the Lord, not for themselves. They would be good stewards of the power of the Holy Spirit. The power would be employed for God’s kingdom purposes, not to build their own kingdoms and empires. With the power of the Holy Spirit they would stand before civil and religious authorities to declare the gospel; they would cross boundaries and barriers for the sake of the gospel; they would heal the sick and raise the dead; they would endure persecutions, yet remain true to their Savior.

May we be reminded, as Christians, to set an example of the right use of power to advance God’s kingdom on earth and for the flourishing of all lives. In a world filled with prejudice, hate, racism, etc., may we employ the Holy Spirit’s power to write a better narrative of showing God’s love to all people, irrespective of their ethnic, economic and educational background. May we preach the gospel through the power of the Holy Spirit through our words and actions.

PRAYER: Come, Holy Spirit, and pour afresh your power on me. Amen.
